Critical acclaim from Mark Metternich a world class fine ‪art‬ ‪‎photographer‬ who ventures to the extremes for the ultimate expression of his craft.

Ok, BIG CHANGES happening with Mark Metternich Fine Art Limited Edition Prints! It looks as if I am going to go EXCLUSIVELY with HIGH DEFINITION LUMACHROME PRINTING (Acrylic Mount) for all my work. I spent several hours yesterday with friend and owner of Nevada Art Printers (Las Vegas) Robert B Park and I am now convinced his Proprietary printing method is now the very best in the world. Being a huge advocate of Fuji Flex / Super Gloss (and Ilfochrome /Cibachrome before it) as the VERY BEST way to print and display color landscape, I had a hard time believing anything can top it. I am now convinced this NEW printing method beats Flex in EVERY way.

How does it beat Fuji Flex Crystal Archive (and even more so Metal Prints)?
1. More detail (is that even possible?) than Fuji Flex Super Gloss! I will say it again: MORE detail.
2. Even better 3D Quality!
3. Superior shadow detail and color fidelity.
4. Wider color gamut (wider than Adobe 1998 RGB)!
5. 16 bit printing!
6. Equal to Flex as far as NO Texture or orange-peel effect (when mounted to Acrylic).
7. Over double the archival rate of Flex (this is rated over 120 years)!
8. Able to print ever larger than Flex (flex was limited to 49 inches on its smallest side).
9. WAY, WAY, WAY betters Reds!
10. Unlike Flex, it is awesome for Black and Whites!
Is there any other category to consider (unless you are targeting the lower end of course - which then cost may be more important to you than quality)?
I will be making some serious prints in the month to come and I will keep everyone informed.

There are 3 types of ink / colorants (waterbased dyes, waterbased pigments and solvent pigments) that are used today and each has it's unique benefits and drawbacks.

There are a lot of buzzwords that float around in the printing business that need to be understood in their proper context to understand their significance. There are 3 types of ink / colorants (waterbased dyes, waterbased pigments and solvent pigments) that are used today and each has it's unique benefits and drawbacks.
Waterbased pigments last much longer but require many more colors to achieve the range of color that dyes are capable of. The added advantage of the extra colors is that tonal gradations in greyscale images are smoother making it ideal for black and white prints. Our unit has 12 colors.
Solvent pigments are much like the oil paints an artist uses. They have the highest longevity and can have exotic metals like chromium giving the very vibrant colors. Artists know the advantages of using Cobalt Blue, Chromium Yellow and Cadmium Red. Our solvent printer uses 8 colors.
At Nevada Art Printers we use all 3 types of technologies as we know all too well that there is no single magic bullet and use each technology where they are best.

Waterbased dye have the highest range of color saturation and vibrance and therefore need only the primary CMYK colors to achieve excellence however they are subject to pollutants in the air. They are outstanding for photographic prints that are laminated to acrylic or cotton paper under glass but a poor choice for an unprotected canvas. Our dye printer uses 6 colors.

CARING FOR YOUR PRINTS

The most important tip: It is recommended that your print be displayed in indirect lighting conditions and away from sunlight. Using archival materials for mats, backing and spacers, museum quality framing and UV protected glass/plexiglass will add to the life of the print.

Giclée Prints on Paper: The paper of the print itself needs to be handled carefully to prevent absorption of oils and/or marks from fingertips. Try to never touch the surface of the paper with bare hands. Be careful to avoid dents and creases, since these can be very difficult or impossible to remove later.

Giclée Prints on Canvas: When stretching canvas prints, do not steam the back of the canvas to remove wrinkles. This can cause your image to yellow and if not properly dried, can allow fungus to grow. When stretching, use rounded stretcher bars and reduce the amount of tension slightly, depending on the relative temperature and humidity.Clean your canvas print with a dry, lint free cloth or soft brush. Never use a wet or moist cloth to clean your giclée canvas pint.

Storage: Please store your final canvas or paper piece in an environment controlled for both humidity and temperature. Ideal environmental conditions are 70 degrees and 55% humidity. High humidity can cause yellowing. You should not store heavily embellished prints in plastic bags.

ARCHIVAL QUESTIONS

Prints that last is of major importance when you are selling your work or creating an heirloom to pass on for generations. Fortunately the Giclee industry has catered to this criteria and has brought several wonderful medias to market that have very high archival permanence when used with the proper inkset.

Every one of our offerings has an estimated print life in excess of 100 years and some approaching 200 years before noticeable fading with our Sunset Coating.

These premium medias are not inexpensive, however we find that not only do the better materials last much longer but they also give vastly superroir prints which makes our job of proofing easier.
The age old saying of Quality in = Quality out, holds true as our Motus Operandi.

DIGITAL PRINTMAKING BASICS

There are many questions that arise when clients make the decision to take the next step in their art sales and offer Giclee prints. We have put together a brief synopsis of answers to the most commonly asked questions.

Nevada Art Printers can print from your files or we can create ultra high resolution files that are calibrated for faithful reproductions on our equipment.

For the best reproductions, Artists will schedule a "session" similar to a portrait session and bring us their original artwork where we will prep a digital file for output under highly controlled conditions to match the original with our printing technology.

MONITOR SETUP & COLOR ACCURACY

The quality of your monitor will have a profound impact on the accurcy and quality of files if you are preparing them yourself for print.

The chart above is a calibrated test image that is useful for determining your monitors health and color accuracy. It is available from Nevada Art Printers as a printed reference target upon request.

Take note of the boxes with arrows pointing toward them. On a well calibrated high quality monitor you should barely be able to make out the box from the surrounding area. A good place to start is to adjust your monitors contrast to 100% and adjust the brightness down until you get as close a match on the boxes as possible.

Setup Fees are for artwork that is newly created and the artist wants the highest possible quality

Setup Fees are for artwork that is newly created and the artist wants the highest possible quality reproductions created. We will create high resolution master files that capture all of the fine printable detail of the original and color correct the file so the original color is reflected in the Giclee. We store the proprietary file on our server so future prints are ready to be created at your demand.

The setup fee includes an 8 x 12 proof print that the client must aprove before reproductions are made. The Client keeps the proof and gets a web sized version of the proprietary file for use on their website or emailing.

Setup Fees vary based on original artwork size. Larger originals require more scan passes, more computer processing time and take up more memory on our server archive.
